Family Assistance
Mothers of Wonder is primarily a parent support group. While we frequently participate in community service projects and do what we can to help friends and neighbors in times of crisis, we are not equipped to provide financial assistance to families in need. If you or someone you know needs assistance with food, clothing, shelter, utility bills, etc., we encourage you to access the local resources listed below.
Fauquier Immediate Sympathetic Help (F.I.S.H.) - (Helps with food (once a month) and utility bill or rent…must have cut-off or Pay or Quit notice (once a year) 540-347-3474
Virginia Employment Commission - Apply for unemployment benefits. The closest office is in Culpeper. 540-829-7430
Salvation Army – Offers some emergency food if they have it and financial assistance with utility bills…must have cut-off or Pay or Quit notice. 540-341-8385
Fredericksburg Citadel Corps of the Salvation Army - Handles some emergency assistance programs. 540-373-3431
Fauquier County Department of Social Services – Apply for TANF and food stamps, as well as Medicaid/FAMIS if necessary. For those who are ineligible, it may be possible to apply for General Relief (also through Social Services). DSS has the Work Center, which may help find a job. DSS may also know about additional resources. 540-347-2316
Fauquier Community Action – Offers financial assistance with utility bills or rent…must have cut-off or Pay or Quit notice. Must go in and fill out application. 540-347-7000
People Helping People – Offers financial assistance with utility bills or rent….must have cut-off or Pay or Quit notice. Must go in and fill out application. 540-349-9017
Community Touch Inc. – Offers furniture through a voucher system (for free) and clothing as needed. Operates a thrift store where clothes are $5 a brown paper bag. Also has a food pantry. 540-439-9300 www.communitytouchinc.org
Grace Episcopal Church in The Plains – Offers free clothing giveaway once a month. 540-253-5177
Warrenton United Methodist Church USDA Food Giveaway – The third Saturday of every month. Contact the church to fill out an application. 540-347-1367
St. Johns (St. Vincent de Paul) – Limited financial assistance offered depending on the situation. Operates a small food bank.
Fauquier County Food Bank – Offers food once every two weeks. Open 6 days a week. Located on Garrett Street in Warrenton. Can receive perishable food daily. 540-347-7000
Fauquier Community Child Care, Inc. - Childcare provided based on a sliding fee scale. Contact your local elementary school for further information. www.fauquiercommunitychildcare.org
